Products from Beira Alta

The Beira Alta is high plateau between the Douro and the Cordilheira Central. Cold winters, hard summers, and the craft of a sheep's cheese that cures for forty days on stone. From here come queijo da Serra da Estrela DOP (Portugal's protected designation of origin), requeijão, Dão wine, and the sweets of Viseu. These are the village cheesemakers, the beekeepers of the Caramulo, and the people who still work by hand as they learned it from a father and a grandfather.
