Products from Baixo Alentejo

The Baixo Alentejo runs from Alcácer do Sal and the Comporta down to the Algarve. It takes in the inland plain (Beja, Vidigueira, Serpa) and the Alentejo coast (Grândola, Santiago do Cacém, Sines), with the Sado estuary marking its northern limit. Wheat, olive, cork oak and cork montado inland; rice fields, salt pans and oysters along the Atlantic strip. From here come queijo de Serpa DOP (Portugal's protected designation of origin), Alentejo bread baked in a wood-fired oven, Vidigueira wine, black pork cured sausage, the salt and fleur de sel of the Sado pans, and oysters raised in the estuary. These are the small producers who live off the montado and the flat land, and those who work the low coast between the Sado and the Mira.
